Young Drivers Can Save Money on Car Insurance

Young Drivers Can Save Money on Car Insurance
By Marilyn Katz

Car insurance prices can be the worst sort of sticker shock for young drivers and their parents. I have known families who were stunned to see their monthly insurance premiums double or triple when they added a new driver to their previously affordable car insurance policy. However, you can take a few steps to minimize your costs. I cannot promise that you will find cheap car insurance for a young driver, but you will be able to get the best possible price.

Research

If you are considering a car purchase for the young driver, be sure to take car insurance prices into account. Insurance companies factor in safety features and a car model's history into their charges. Older cars are not always cheaper to insure even though they have less value. A new car with improved anti-theft and safety features may get a better break.

Also shop around between insurance companies. A young driver's insurance company may assume that their current company will give them the best break. Insurance companies usually do offer discounts for multiple policies, like home and auto. But the company who works well for established drivers, who are married, and have few accidents, may not be a great choice for a young driver. I would certainly offer my own company the first crack at my own teenager's insurance policy, but I would also get multiple quotes from other companies.

Look For Young Driver Discounts

A young driver has two basic problems. First, an insurance company will consider them a high risk just because they are young. Secondly, the young driver has not established any sort of history for themselves, so the worst is assumed. However, many insurance companies will credit other sorts of positive histories against the lack of a driving history.

If you are a young driver with good grades, be sure and look for a good student discounts. Insurance companies will assume that a student with a B average or above will apply that same concern for school to their driving habits. Certain accredited safe driving classes can also qualify for a safe driver discount. Also, anti-theft and safety devices on a car can earn cheaper insurance rates!

Young Drivers Need to Be Extra Careful Drivers!

Now that you have shopped around for the best possible break from a car insurance company, maintain a good record. Accidents happen, but caution, defensive driving, and patience can minimize their frequency. One incident, caused by a young driver's recklessness can wipe out all of the insurance company's good will, especially because the young driver has no history to balance the incident with.
