Reducing Air Pollution
Generating only electricity, water and heat, hydrogen fuel cells do not release NOx and SOx or any other pollutants for that matter. As they replace internal combustion engines and other conventional energy systems in a variety of applications, we will see a significant reduction in air pollution and its associated problems, provided the hydrogen is generated from water, using renewable and sustainable energy sources.

Reducing Greenhouse Gases
Producing no greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions themselves, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies offer a significant improvement over internal combustion engines if the hydrogen is produced from low-GHG sources.

Today, fuel cell power plants generally use natural gas as the source of the hydrogen. In this case, the fuel cell power plant will emit carbon dioxide, but far less than conventional systems, since fuel cells boast higher energy efficiency. Even fuel cells that use fossil fuels as their hydrogen source are expected to reduce GHG emissions by as much as 85%, on a wells to wheels basis, because of their high efficiency.
